Being in Trieste seems somehow unlike being in Italy until one discovers that this major port was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Slovenian border is only a few miles away, curving round to the north and east. From Trieste, Slovenia and Croatia can be reached.
Trieste is a terrific destination for those with children as there are many caves and castles to explore. There are also several scientific themed museums in the area. The city's many neo-classical buildings and wide, planned road networks are reminders of the former importance of the port, and although they are ageing somewhat, the town still has a solid and respectable air. There are numerous places that would feature as a ‘must see’ but a visit must include the restored fortress, the Castello di San Giusto with its’ magnificent views from the memorial garden, the lovely Cattedrale di San Giusto (resting place of St. Just) which dates from the fourteenth century and, perhaps most remarkable, the Roman Theatre which dates back to the first century that has been magnificently well preserved.
