Sorrento is a small town that is wonderfully located at the top of white cliffs that enjoys panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. Sorrento is built on a terrace of limestone and is enclosed by impressive mountains. The region is famous for growing excellent citrus fruits. The summit of the peninsula where Sorrento is located is only five kilometres away from the island of Capri. On a clear day it is also possible to see the islands of Ischia and Procida.
The town gives its name to the Sorrento Peninsula, which is a large area reaching from Vico Equense to Massa Lubrense. The area, thanks to its geographical shape, is stunningly beautiful and has been a popular Italian resort for many years. Sorrento was originally a Phoenician colony, and later became a port frequented by Greeks. It was named by the Greeks as ‘Syrenusion’ or Syreon’, meaning Siren’s land. Sirens were mythological creatures, half woman and half fish. Homer made reference to these creatures in his famous work the ‘Odyssey’.
