Silhouette Island is the third largest island in the Seychelles, exceeded only by Mahé and Praslin. It is an unspoiled and truly beautiful island. Silhouette Island is very mountainous, and there are five huge peaks that frame the skyline. These mountainous peaks provide the island with the most dramatic of views of the Seychelles.
The island is of volcanic origin and is named after an 18th Century French dignitary. The famous privateer, Hodoul, once lived on Silhouette and it is believed that he buried treasure here. There are no roads, so it is a place for walkers. For serious walkers, there are two paths through equatorial forests. There are many traditional Creole houses to be seen as well as an old plantation house, one of the finest in Seychelles. The house was built in the 1860s and was the family home of Henri Dauban, who owned the island and employed labourers on his estate, producing copra, cinnamon oil and vanilla. The beautiful coral barrier reefs around the island offer an amazing experience, and there are many excellent dive sites available.
