Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic. The city is divided into two parts by the Ozama River. Santo Domingo has a large, substantially intact colonial district, which has dozens of wonderful old buildings; the area is called the Zona Colonial. To the west of it lays Gazcue, one of the city's oldest neighbourhoods. Surrounding the Gazcue area you will find the Palacio Nacional, the National Theatre, the Museums in the Plaza de la Cultura, and the Palace of Fine Arts. The city's waterfront borders the Caribbean Sea and attracts many tourists because of its hotels, casinos, palm-lined boulevards and monuments. A major monument is Columbus's Lighthouse, where the explorer's remains are buried. The city has two main parks, the Parque Mirador Sur in the South and the Jardin Botanico in the North. The city is very cosmopolitan and provides much cultural diversity.
