Roseau is located on the west coast of Dominica. The town is a colourful and picturesque assortment of modern and colonial houses and architecture. It is the oldest urban settlement on the island. The Botanical Gardens were established in 1891, these well-appointed gardens in Roseau also contain an aviary with Sisserou parrots, plus the famous 'crushed bus', a victim of devastating Hurricane David. Situated on the Bay front and overlooking the Old Market is the Dominica Museum, it is located in an old court house. The museum gives you a good introduction to the culture and social history of the island, from geology and archaeology to the present day. Morne Bruce is a fantastic viewpoint overlooking Roseau and the Botanical Gardens, reached via 'Jack's Trail' from the east gate of the Botanical Gardens. There is a market several days a week, it is a riot of colour and tropical fruits and vegetables, and is well worth a walk round.
