Puerto Chiapas, formerly known as Puerto Madero, is an important commercial port in the state of Chiapas. On arrival at Puerto Chiapas, don't be surprised to see musicians and dancers in colourful costumes performing on the pier. The town of Puerto Chiapas holds little of touristic interest; the main town in the area is Tapachula. Tapachula sits at the base of an extinct volcano called El Tacaná. El Tacaná is important in the archaeology of the area since many structures at Izapa Ruins, a pre-Columbian site with groups of mounds that had previously included pyramids and community plazas, were aligned to El Tacana. You can go to Park M. Hidalgo in Puerto Chiapas, where you can sit and take in the sights and sounds of town as well as walk to the nearby Municipal Palace and a local outdoor theatre where mamba concerts often occur.
