Originally the villa of Pisco was founded in 1640. Pisco originally prospered because of its nearby vineyards and is the namesake of the Peruvian grape liquor, pisco. The contrast between desert and sea in this area is captivating. Pisco also boasts the origins of one of the major ancient civilisations in Peru, the Paracas culture, who left an astounding collection of antiquities that are displayed in the museums of Lima. There is a large concentration of marine animals and birds at the Paracas National Reserve, or the Peruvian Galapagos, the scenery is quite breathtaking, the Cathedral is in a very intriguing spot, it is a natural rock formation jutting out of the shore side cliff, which truly does look like a cathedral. The area also has unique pebblestone beaches. The local people here in this bustling town are dedicated to handicrafts and industrial fishing activities. Near the town, just off the road to Ayacucho, lies the large well-preserved Inca site of Tambo Colorado.
