Palau is one of the most spectacular and noteworthy seaside towns in Gallura, bordering the Emerald Coast. The modern harbour extends along the coastline, creating a variety of beautiful sheltered bays and small rocky islands.
Palau is situated in one of the most scenic coastlines of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia facing the Island of Maddalena. This spectacular coastline is unique throughout the area, Mother Nature has for centuries sculptured the rock face and the results are truly amazing. Well worth a visit is a particularly famous example, Bear's cliff, a granite rock measuring 122 metres high and which has been eroded by the wind over the years to such an extent that the rock now takes the shape of a bear looking out to sea. Palau takes its name from the fourteenth century fishermen selected the area as being a safe and sheltered haven, using the term 'Parago’ or ‘Parao’ this over the years became Palau.
