Opatija is a town in Western Croatia situated at the foot of Ucka Mountain. The shady promenade of Opatija runs for 7 miles, showing off its beautiful rocky gulf coasts with plenty of platforms off which you can swim. Opatija is well known for the Maiden with the seagull, a statue by Zvonko Car (1956), which stands on a promontory by the Juraj Šporer art pavilion. It has turned into one of the symbols of Opatija.
A gilded variant of the statue Madonna, that once stood here but was destroyed by communists after the end of WWII, now stands in front of Saint James's Church. Opatija is home to the Naval and Historical Museum, The City Tower which was originally one of the city gates as well as the 13th Century Trsat Castle which overlooks the city. The high coastal mountains help protect the coast from cold north winds leading to an early spring and a late autumn.
