Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay as well as being the major cruise port of the country. The history of the city dates back to around 1724 and has gone through many changes in its long history. The city is described as a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life and is the hub of activity in the area. The architecture of Montevideo ranges from colonial to art deco with influences from Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and British rule.
There are many things to see and do within the main port area and further into the main town in Montevideo. A visit to the old town is a must and you can see the Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral and the fascinating postmodern World Trade Centre. There are two magnificent palaces within the area, the Palace Salvo which dominates the skyline and the Palacio Legislativo in the north of the city centre.
Near the main town is the Pocitos district which has many beautiful beaches as well as some tremendous architecture and grand houses built in the 1920’s.
