Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea. The islands belong to Spain and the name ‘Menorca’ comes from the Spanish for Small Island comparing the island to its neighbour Majorca. The island is very popular with tourists particularly those seeking to learn about the culture and history of these beautiful islands as well as with families looking for a glorious beach holiday destination.
The islands capital city is Mahon which is located on the Eastern side of Menorca. The harbour is the second deepest natural harbour in the world and the water here is clear and warm and there are a few beaches dotted nearby for swimming. The city has a rich cultural history dating back to 205 BC and there are many buildings, monuments and museums from more recent history including the magnificent Fortaleza de la Mola, a 19th century fort and the Church of Santa Maria. For children the wonderful aquarium offers a variety of exhibitions and a wide array of Mediterranean flora and fauna. The Plaza Espana offers a beautiful lookout point and is accessed by a spiral staircase from the pier. The plaza also serves as a meat and fish market during the mornings and has a brilliant atmosphere with locals buying their produce and enthusiastic traders proffering their wares.
Menorca and its capital of Mahon offer a wonderful stop off destination during your cruise and the port itself is a fantastic gateway into one of the most beautiful and fascinating islands in the Balearics.
