Located on the North African coast, Melilla is one of only two Spanish cities located in mainland Africa. As many Spanish towns are, Melilla is seperated into an old and a new quarter and the oldest part dates back to the 16th century.
There are two Citadels (castles) in Melilla one of which is on the Parade Ground where the remains of the old Roman settlement are found. Also in the old part is the Plaza de las Penuelas which is home to the Chapel of Santiago and the Museum of the City.
The modern part of the city is home to the Plaza de Espana where you can find the Art Deco building of the Palace of La Asamblea.
Melilla is also known as the city of the four religions, Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu and there are many churches and restaurants relating to the different cultures.
