Marina di Carrara is beautifully positioned between the blue sea, the pine woods and the spectacular mountains. Carrara is situated 1000 metres above sea level at the foot of the Apuane Alps and is approximately 7 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian coastline.
Carrara lies at the foot of the Apuane Alps in a valley which is crossed by the Carrione stream. It is considered a world centre for the production and the exportation of marble. The most valuable and symbolic work of the town is the cathedral, which is a wonderful building constructed in two- tone marble. Carrara Marble was sought after by artists such as Michelangelo, and each year artists and sculptors from around the world congregate in the main square to carve their masterpieces from this beautiful marble. The quarry found high into the mountains, is an enormous crater packed with huge chunky blocks of crystallised stone. The people of Carrara know exactly how fortunate they are to have such a wonderful natural resource.
