Maputo formerly named Lourenzo Marques, is the capital and main port of Mozambique. The city has avenues lined with red acacia and lilac jacaranda flowering trees and offers innumerable historical, cultural and scenic attractions. The gap between the rich and the poor is vast, there are many multi-million dollar mansions overlooking the sea while slums still remain in the city.
Under Portuguese influence, Lourenzo Marques became one of Africa's most beautiful and fashionable cities havingan impressive skyline of tall buildings and a cosmopolitan Portuguese and African atmosphere. However, Mozambique's war in the 1970s and1980s threw this prosperous African city in chaos and poverty. When peace finally came, the once proud city was in terrible disrepair. Today Maputo is slowly recapturing some of its former glory. One of the imposing buildings here is the Central Railway Station, an enormous structure resembling a palace for kings, rather than a commuter station, and the Museum of the Revolution tells the story of the struggle against Portuguese colonialism.
