Mahe is the largest island of the Seychelles, and is situated in the north east of the nation; it is also home to the capital city of Victoria. With a backdrop of towering granite peaks, Mahé is an extraordinary treasure trove of flora and fauna that has evolved over centuries of isolation. It was first visited by the British in 1609.
Rare endemic plants found nowhere else in the world adorn the mist forests of the mountains, such as the jellyfish tree, the carnivorous Seychelles pitcher plant and the Seychelles vanilla orchid. The mountain ranges form the backbone of the island, Morne Seychellois is the island's highest peak and the area here is surrounded by a beautiful National Park. The park provides great hiking opportunities in which to admire the superb scenery. There are more than sixty idyllic beaches fringed with swaying palms that are dotted along the shoreline. The city of Victoria is named after Queen Victoria, during the British colonial rule, and is the largest settlement area on Mahe.
