Mahdia is a Tunisian coastal town, located south of Monastir and southeast of Sousse. The ancient former capital of Tunisia offers a laidback atmosphere in which to enjoy a truly relaxing visit. Buildings here date back as far as the tenth century, such as the Great Mosque and the Casbah. This has resulted in Mahdia becoming a very popular destination.
The town can be entered by the Black Passage, or Skifa el-Kahla in Arabic, this was once the only entrance to the town, originally built to keep pirates out. It now welcomes tourists into the old town's appealing courtyards, alleyways and squares. The daily fish market offers bundles of octopus freshly spiked by boys with wooden canes. The huge fortress dominates the town and offers views of the sea and port. The old town reveals the essence of Tunisian culture, weavers toil away on their looms and skilled craftsmen in small artisan workshops can be seen. Mahdia is famed for its production of intricately-coloured cloth, which is enlivened by gold thread.
