Originally founded in the seventeenth century, by an East Indian merchant company, that was trading with India. The name Lorient comes from the French word for the orient, which is L'Orient. The region soon became an important navel and fishing port.
During WW11 Germany built an important strategic submarine base in Lorient's port. Unable to destroy the base itself the ally forces bombed Lorient town in order to cut supplies to the base. This resulted in almost the entire town being destroyed. Lorient was rebuilt in the 1950s and is now Brittany's fourth largest town and the second largest fishing port in France. The main historic attraction is the old, German built, submarine base which was transformed into a museum in 1997 when the last working submarine left. The town is situated on the Atlantic Ocean coast, where the rivers Blavet and Scorff enter the ocean. It has been rebuilt to make the most of its coastal position. The port area is filled with bistros and restaurants specialising in locally caught fresh fish.
