Longyearbyen is the largest populated area in Norway and the capital of the Svalbard archipelago. If you walk out the main city towards the fjords you will see the old cemetery and several abandoned mine buildings which were once the main industry in Longyearbyen.
Worth a visit is the Spitsbergen Airship Museum which shows the history of polar exploration using dirigibles and other aircreaft used by Norwegians, Italians and Americans. If you visit the Svalbard Gallery you can watch the resident artists at work then looked at their pieces in the main viewing space. The Svalbard Museum shows the human history of the region including its whaling and mining history.
The world’s most northernmost church is in Longyearbyen and has a small café and a souvenir shop and is used as the main tourist hub for the area.
The most exciting thing about the city is the wildlife. The Reindeer and Polar Foxes roam free through the city!
