Londonderry or Derry as it is often called is an old 6th century walled city. The walls dating back from the 17th century are a mile in circumference and are very much still intact. These walls were never penetrated during the siege of Derry in the 1689 which lasted for 105 days. After this the city earned the nickname of the Maiden City.
Derry has a rich and varied cultural heritage and the City Walls are home to a number of museums, galleries and theatres. Situated on the Waterside area is Riverwatch which provides the opportunity to explore the Foyle and Carlingford Loughs. The WorkhouseMuseum tells the story of the famine and the Battle of the Atlantic. Prehen House is home to one of Ireland’s greatest love stories, the legend of Half Hung McNaughton. Londonderry folk are renown for their friendliness and hospitality.
