Jondal is a village with characteristic architectural style and many beautiful buildings. Over the village the big "Hardanger Cathedral" looms and close by you find many Swiss houses from 19th and 20th century with stone roofs and well kept orchards, small gravel walks bind the houses together. This beautiful church called "The Hardanger Cathedral" was built in 1888 and is the largest in Hardanger. The altarpiece has been painted by Nils Bergslien, the old church bell originate from 13th century. By the sea you find Bronze Age and At Bakke in Herand near the main road to Utne you can one find about 150 special rock-carvings with unique human bodies, sacrifice hollows and fertility symbols from the Bronze Age. Viketunet in Jondal is a farm dating from the 15th -17th century, 2 minutes walk from the ferry quay, the courtyard, where the country policemen lived, contains 7 houses, the oldest dating from about 1611. The district of Jondal and Herand has Norway´s 3rd largest glacier, and it is possible to hike to the top of the glacier about 1550 metres above sea level.
