Inhambane is a tropical town situated on a peninsula, overlooking the bay. It has deserted white beaches and clear tropical waters. It is situated 500 km north of Maputo. The town of Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements in southern Africa. In 1534, Portuguese traders established a trading post here and their legacy can be seen in the architecture and layout of the city.
The town has some beautiful colonial architecture and is considered by many to be one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique There are many old buildings in varying states of repair, including a lovely cathedral. The market, where slaves, ivory, gold and spices were once traded, is well worth a visit. It is possible to sail around the bay or up to the Linga Linga Nature Reserve.
This fascinating area used to be a whaling station but is now the home to some of the last remaining dugong in Southern Mozambique. The landscape surrounding Inhambane is dominated by thousands of coconut palms.
