Ilulissat has become one of Greenlands most popular tourist destinations, it is located on the west coast 250km from the Artic circle. Ilulissat is the native town of Artic explorer Knud Rasmussen, and his childhood home has been turned into a museum. The first inhabitants settled here 3,500-4,000 years ago, the population now is 4,800. The awe-inspiring scenery and the dramatic sound of the icebergs breaking off into the sea help to make it a popular tourist ‘must see’. The Icefjord Kangia has been admitted onto the World Heritage list.
Southwest of Ilulissat you can get a view of the majestic icebergs floating past on their way out to open water. Fishing is still Greenland’s chief industry, and the active harbour sees many boats come in with an opportunity to get a closer look at the catch.
Ilulissat is a town where nature never sleeps.
