Gudvangen is a village in the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is a popular tourist destination and is located at the end of the Nærøyfjord where the Nærøydalselvi River empties into the fjord. Gudvangen is nature at its most spectacular. Waterfalls line the steep mountainsides and goat farms lie scattered about the green valleys. Nearby is Bakka Church it is a white wooden church and was built in year 1859 and has about 200 seats. Elsewhere enter into the depths of the earth on a soft carpet, listen to the Norwegian Edvard Greig's music as you pass running and dripping water, see specially lit caverns and ponds that contrast the white mine galleries. The world famous Flam Railway is a marvel of engineering. The only thing lacking when the railway line between Oslo and Bergen was opened in 1909, was a branch line to the Sognefjord, in order to assure a transport route to the fjord, work was begun on the Flam Railway in 1920, it took 20 years to complete, the most time-consuming work was on the tunnels, these were excavated manually.
