Situated in the South between Santa Cruz and Camara de Lobos, Funchal is the capital and most affluent city of Madeira. The name Funchal comes from the amount of Fennel or Funcho grown on the island.
Worth a visit is the Quinta do Palheiro park set in the grounds of a typical British Colonial style manor. Although you can’t access the manor house, the grounds are planted with examples from all over the world and there are plants blooming throughout the year. There is also a beautiful tea house which is connected to a golf course.
To get a real flavour of Madeiran culture you must visit the Mercado Dos Lavravradores. The market offers an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables from the island and the vendors will offer the goods for you to try but be careful if you buy anything as they may try to rip you off! If you don’t want to buy any of the produce there are several pastelarias and coffee shops.
The focal point of Funchal is the Cathedral. Made mostly of local materials, the Cathedral was built between 1493 and 1517 and was commissioned by King Dom Manuel the first.
