East London is one of the most appealing cities on the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The fine sandy beaches overlooking the Indian Ocean make it an ideal destination for surfers, swimmers, and sun worshippers. East London has easy access to other areas such as the WildCoast, and the AmatolaMountains.
Known also as Buffalo City, East London is situated on the Buffalo River. It is the only river port in South Africa. The city was originally known as Port Rex and eventually settled as a means of providing supplies to the garrisons who were protecting the white settlers from the Xhosas. Founded as a military camp in 1847, it became a municipality in 1873, and elevated to the rank of city in 1914. The city bears an indelible mark on the history of South Africa. Several examples of 19th-century architecture enhance the charm of the city. The discovery of a live coelacanth in the harbour was regarded internationally as the most significant zoological find of the century; this specimen can be seen at the East London Museum.
