The Isle of Man is part of the British Isles, but not the United Kingdom. It is a Crown dependency, with its own parliament, Tynwald. The Queen is the ‘Lord of Mann’, the Island’s constitutional head of state, represented by a resident Lieutenant Governor. Douglas is the capital of the island and is also the main tourist and commercial centre.
The magnificent sweep of the bay with a rolling countryside background is beautiful. Douglas was a pioneer in illuminations and at night the bay really comes alive. Along the sea front run the Douglas horse trams, which are now the only ones still in existence. The Manx Museum is a fascinating place to gain an insight of the Island's unique history. Douglas owes much of its development to the fact that it provides a sheltered haven from the prevailing winds. The two harbour piers are named after Queen Victoria and King Edward VIII, the latter pier being one of the few monuments here that commemorate the brief reign of this monarch.
