Cristobal is a port city that resides at the entrance of Limon Bay on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. It is located on the western edge of Manzanillo Island and is part of the Panamanian city and province of Colón. Cristobal area landmarks like the Hotel Washington, Christ Church by the Sea, and the St. Mary's Academy's Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal are very well preserved and worth visiting. Cristobal Pier gets high marks for its lively crafts market and folklore shows. At nearby Colon, where there is also a modern port, and if you like shopping, there is one of the largest duty-free zones in Western Hemisphere. At nearby Portobelo, founded by Christopher Columbus way back in 1502, there are some historic vestiges worth exploring, such as the San Lorenzo Fort. The Gatún Locks and the Gatún Dam are impressive to see as the ships pass through the canal.
