Colón is the second largest city in Panama, at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal.
Three modern ports make Colón one of the most important ports of the Caribbean Sea. Visit the Portobelo National Park, the varied coastline found here provides offshore reefs, scores of lagoons and plenty of nice beaches. Portobelo and the San Lorenzo Fort are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which helps to cement their status as major tourist attractions in Colon. Other choice attractions are the Gatún Locks and the Gatún Dam. The large Gatún Locks are especially impressive, and watching the ships pass through is sure to make for interesting sightseeing. At nearby Chagres National Park, you can enjoy some of the country's best bird watching, rafting and sport fishing are other Chagres National Park activities that are becoming more and more popular. A visit to Colon gives you the rare opportunity to see a country that has been way off the beaten track for many years and is, in some cases, truly unspoiled.
