Bilbao has undergone a massive economic and social regeneration in recent years and is now home to several iconic buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Basque Museum. Bilbao is situated in the area of Bizkaia and just outside the main city is a landscape rich in forests, mountains and beaches.
The Guggenheim Museum was built in 1997 and is covered in titanium panels and shares the largest modern and contemporary art collection with New York and Venice. There are three collections within the museum, old art, contemporary art and Basque art. Not to be missed is the flower puppy who sits proudly outside the entrance to the museum.
Bilbao’s oldest and most striking building is the Cathedral de Santiago. Built in the 19th century in a Gothic style the Cathedral has a crypt where the old shrine once stood as well as the original choir stalls and cloister.
Boasting a fine menu of games, courses, workshops and film sessions put on by the city council as well as the numerous cocktail bars and nightclubs, Bilbao has become a mecca for young people and is fast becoming the place for a weekend getaway.
