St. Kitts & Nevis is a two island confederation in the West Indies, and the smallest of the Americas. The capital city of the island is Basseterre which is located on the larger of the islands. Both islands enjoys a warm climate year round and offer white sandy beaches surrounded by unspoiled natural beauty. A volcanic mountain chain dominates the centre of both islands.
When Christopher Columbus explored the islands in 1493, they were inhabited by the Carib people. Today, most of the inhabitants are the descendants of African slaves. The Treasury Building is a domed colonial building on the waterfront, and is a reminder of the value of these islands as sugar colonies. The centerpiece of the city's evocative Georgian architecture is its Circus, a roundabout modeled after Piccadilly Circus, in London. Basseterre also has two cathedrals. A visit to the Brimstone Hill Fortress in St. Kitts is a must, as it offers an excellent view of six other islands- Nevis, Montserrat, Saba, Statia, St. Martin and St. Barts. It is truly one of the greatest panoramas in the Caribbean.
