Bangor is a university town and is one of the smallest cities in the United Kingdom. It is situated in a region of outstanding natural beauty where the SnowdoniaMountains reach the sea. The City sits on the edge of the MenaiStrait which is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water separating Bangor and the mainland from the Isle of Anglesey.
The Menai strait is bridged in two places. One of the bridges is Thomas Telford's magnificent iron suspension bridge that first opened in 1826.
Another claim to fame is that Bangor has the longest High Street in Wales. Bangor is one of Wales' oldest cities and its name comes from the protective fence or ‘bangor’ that originally encircled the monastery. A popular site to visit is PenrhynCastle which is a neo Norman building dating back to the early nineteenth century. It is now run by the National Trust. Bangor also has a Museum and ArtGallery.
