Although Ancona is predominantly a modern port, not a tourist town, it offers some wonderful scenery and historic buildings of interest. Most noted of these is the 11th century Cathedral, the art gallery and the archeology museum. Ancona really is a town full of historic architecture. The town boats more than 5 significant churches and numerous gothic buildings.
The Cathedral of Ancona is dedicated to St Ciriaco and was completed in 1189 and houses some beautiful interiors including 10 columns linked to the temple of Venus.
The archaeological museum contains pre-Roman artefacts from tombs in around Ancona, and two Roman beds decorated with Ivory.
The art gallery or Pinacoteca Civica Francesco Podesti was reconstructed in the 15th century and works of art within the gallery include Madonna with Child by Crivelli, Circumcision by Orazio Gentileschi and Gozzi Altarpiece by Titian. There are also several works by modern artists.
Not to be missed is the Arch of Trajan. The 18 metre high marble arch was constructed as an entrance to the causeway on top of the harbour and is considered a fine Roman monument.
