Amalfi is the largest and most popular port on the Amalfi Coast in Campania. The large piazza in the town’s centre is surrounded by beautiful buildings including the 9th century Duomo or St Andrea Cathedral, the cloister and the museum. Amalfi is also home to a small beach which can get very busy but the nearby town of Atrani offers another beach which will be less crowded.
St Andrea Cathedral is located at the top of a long flight of stairs – about 57 steps but is well worth the effort as inside, the Cathedral is a shrine to the past wealth and splendour of Amalfi. The atrium was built in the 13th century and was dedicated to St Andre the Apostle who later became the patron saint of Amalfi. The cloister was built around the 11th century and was used as a burial ground for wealthy families of Amalfi.
