Almeria was once one of the most important ports along the Andulusian Coast and is dominated by its Alcazaba and Cathedral. The Alcazaba was the biggest fortress built by the Arabs in Spain and during this time Almeria was the main commercial port housing more than 10,000 textile mills. The main streets of Almeria are home to several churches including the Church of Santiago the Elder and the neoclassical church of San Pedro which was built on top of an ancient Arab mosque.
Not far from Almeria are the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Nature Reserve where there are beautiful beaches and nature trails and the Sierra Nevada Nature Reserves which is the first marine-land reserve in Andalusia. Made a National Park in 1998, the area has over 86,000ha of glacial lakes, rapid rivers, and sheer-sided gorges. In the foothills are terraces of almond trees.
One thing you must not miss in Almeria is Mini Hollywood. Located in the Desert of Tabernas, Mini Hollywood provided the backdrops for films such as ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ and ‘A Fistful of Dollars’. There are three sites open for visitors and they offer a wide variety of the American Wild West attractions and some of them are still being used as film locations!
