Walk back through the streets to Nessebar port

This shore excursion will take you to the ancient Bulgarian town or Nessebar, a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. On this tour, you will visit a number of churches; whether built during the Byzantine, Bulgarian or Ottoman rule of the city, the churches of Nessebar represent the rich architectural heritage of the Eastern Orthodox world and illustrate the gradual development from Early Christian basilicas to medieval cross-domed churches.

Starting from the port, our tour guide will escort you through the fortified walls at the entrance to Old Nesebar into the cobbled maze of streets. Nessebar's abundance of historic buildings prompted UNESCO to include the town in its list of World Heritage Sites in 1983. Your tour will visit:

The Church of Christ Pantocrator: This 13th–Century church is an art gallery today and is best known for its lavish exterior decoration.

Sveti Stefan (The Church of St. Stephen): Of probable 11th Century construction, this former Orthodox Church in Nessebar has been turned into a museum.

The Church of St John Aliturgetos: The ruins of the 14th Century was not consecrated, hence the name - 'aliturgetos' is the Greek for 'not consecrated. Legend says that one of the builders fell down and was killed and, subsequently, the church canon would not allow a place where a man had been killed to be used for worship (though according to records some services were held here).

The Church of St John the Baptist: A domed cruciform church, built of undressed stone and 12 metres long by 10 metres wide, the Church of St John is one of the best preserved churches in Nessebar and home to frescoes from later periods.

Sveti Spas, or The Church of the Holy Saviour: Though small, this 17th-Century church is notable for its early 17th century wall paintings representing scenes from the Life of Christ and the Holy Virgin, with a painting of the Virgin Platytera in the apse.

Your final stop will be Nessebar's Archaeological Museum, which has four exhibition halls chronologically following the development of the town through the different historical periods. The tour will conclude with a walk back through the streets to the port.

Please note: Unfortunately, due to the cobbled streets, this tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking or for those using a wheelchair.
