Visit Sultanare Palace
Drive to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple
Walk along Jonker Street

After meeting your English-speaking guide at the Parameswara Pier you will commence your tour with a short drive to Red square also known as Dutch Square it is distinguished by a group of bright, terracotta-red colonial Dutch buildings, built between 1660 and 1700. One of the oldest surviving parts of Malacca, Dutch Square’s most prominent building is the Stadthuys Christ Church. Presiding over the entire south side of Dutch Square it was completed in 1660 and is said to be the oldest-existing Dutch building in the East.

Following a short 10 min walk uphill to St Paul’s Hill (this is approximatley 60 steps, however they are not steep stairs) you will have the chance to take in stunning views of the city of Malacca. St Paul’s church originally built in 1521, is the oldest church building in Malaysia. Built on the site of the last Malaccan sultan’s istana (palace), now ruined and covered in ferns is a beautiful, breezy sanctuary. Next stop is a photo stop at Porta De Santiago. The fort of Porta De Santiago (A Famosa) is one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in the whole of Asia. This tiny gate is the last remains of what used to be a mighty fortress.

Note: The steps down leading to A’Famosa Fort are quite challenging. They are different heights and some are narrow or very high.

Continue to the base of St Paul’s hill to Melaka Sultanate Palace, a wooden replica of Sultan Mansur Shah’s 15th-century palace. It was painstakingly constructed in 1985 using traditional construction techniques and materials, based on accounts from the 16th century.

Drive to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple this Chinese temple is the oldest Buddhist place of worship in the country. Built in 1646, it is also known as the ‘Merciful Cloud Temple’. The temple received a UNESCO award for outstanding architectural restoration and ranks among the most significant in Southeast Asia. Located on Jonker Street which is the central street of Chinatown – was once renowned for its antique shops. Now popular for its handicrafts, clothing and many restaurants it’s the perfect place to pick up a little souvenir before you head back to your ship.
