This tour has set start times: 7pm - 8pm - 9 pm & 10pm Nightly, availabilty is limited - book early to get the time you need.

Head over to one of Charleston's alternative sightseeing destinations, the infamous Old City Jail. The first of its buildings were constructed in 1738 and the site served as a slave workhouse, a hospital for the indigent and the city jail.

Many methods of punishment were used in these times and more serious offenses resulted in shackling, whipping and starvation. Some inmates were also branded, drawn and quartered and burned at the stake. The jailer would serve physical punishment to horse thieves by nailing their ears to a pole and only returning it upon their release. The countries first female serial killer was executed here along with Lavinia Fisher and her husband in 1820. Both were hanged for poisoning and robbing guests who stayed at their hotel.

Many of the sites original buildings are still intact today, including the warden's quarter's and jail cells. The cells were designed to hold up to 128 prisoners, however the number often swelled to more than 300. Such cramped conditions led to poor sanitation, and abuse was ghastly.

With more than 10,000 people who have died here, their spirits have inspired legends and stoked the jail's reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the city.

During this haunting tour you will hear horrifying tales as well as view the cells and hallways where Charleston's worst pirates, murderers and thieves lived and died.

Your experienced guide will provide an in-depth insight into the stories, legends and history of the city's dark side.
