Itinerary

When does my tour start?

The tour time will be set to fit in with your arrival time.

When do I return to port after my tour/excursion?

The tour is 2 hours in length so you will be returned in plenty of time for your cruise ship departure. All tour times are based on Shore time (i.e. local time, - not ship time)

You will be met at the port by a Cruising Excursions representative who will then guide to your adapted transportation.

Sit back and relax as you head off on a scenic drive to your first stop at the Lagoa do Fogo volcanic complex, one of the largest lakes in the Azores and the second largest on the island of Sao Miguel.  This lake of very deep blue waters occupies 1360 hectares and forms great volcanic massif of Serra de gua de Pau. Located in the central zone of the island it has dense and exuberant endemic vegetation.

Head over to the Pico da Barrosa Viewpoint. At an altitude of 949 metres and part of the Ribeira Grande city, it is from here where you will be able to see the impressive Lago do Fogo lake at its fullest. Lagoa do Fogo is a vast crater lake which is surrounded in forested production and endemic Macaronesian species.

This fantastic viewpoint is perfect for bird lovers as Kites and Seagulls can often been seen, giving you a unique feeling of being surrounded by nature. The Caldeira Velha Interpretation centre will be our next stop. A popular, scenic nature reserve featuring lush vegetation, a waterfall and hot springs, plus showers. It works hard to promote the natural heritage of the area and is also home to 3 thermal pools and offers an interpretative exhibition that leads its visitors into a voyage through the volcanic origin of the islands, the Fogo volcano formation, the biodiversity, geodiversity, geothermal and thermal resources.

From here you will be confronted with the geothermal field developed on the northern flank of "Vulcao do Fogo". The geothermal power plants exploit a deep geothermal reservoir of high enthalpy, converting their heat into electricity.

It is from here we will make our last stop at the only city on the north of the island, Ribeira Grande.

This city and a municipality has a unique diversity of landscapes where you can discover and enjoy the beauty of the Lagoa do Fogo, chosen as one of the seven Portuguese Wonders in the wild beach category. It is a Natural Reserve with a high environmental, landscape and tourist value and one of the ex-libris of the Azores.

Not only does it have rich cultural and religious attractions, it is also the location for many important economic activities as the production of cheese, green tea, liquor's and chocolates. With your day now at an end we will head back to the south of the island and back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your ship's departure.
