Itinerary

When does my tour start?

The tour time will be set to fit in with your arrival time.

When do I return to port after my tour/excursion?

The tour is 4 hours in length so you will be returned in plenty of time for your cruise ship departure. All tour times are based on Shore time (i.e. local time, - not ship time)

Clients will be met by a Cruising Excursions representative at the cruise port.

Take a journey into the underworld charm, that is the Green Grotto Caves.  The caves are a vast unexplored labyrinth of mystical underground caverns, surrounded by thick vegetation and supplied with pristine waters flowing from its depths. Originally inhabited by the Arawak Indians (Tainos), they used the caves for various purposes, and proof of this is evident in the multiple fragments of pottery and artefacts that have been unearthed during time.

You will take a tour of the Caves, where your guide will explain the history and true culture of this well-preserved site. Depending on the size of your party, the tour of the caves may be a shared experience.

During the 17th Century when the English invaded the island of Jamaica, the Green Grotto Caves were used as a hideout for the Spaniards who were being driven out of the country. In the mid-20th Century, between the two world wars, they were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba. During the Second World War, the Government of Jamaica used the entrance of the cave as a storeroom for rum in barrels. Over the years, there have been many names given to the caves including - the Runaway Bay Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Hopewell Caves, Rum Caves and Dairy Caves, the Green Grotto Caves is among Jamaica’s most visited natural attractions.

In time, the local government of Jamaica recognized the important and significance of this site and has placed it in the ownership and operation of the Urban Development Corporation and the St Ann Development Company respectively. Since then, the Green Grotto Caves have been transformed into a popular visitor’s attraction winning Green Globe 21 Certification since 2003 and in 2009 achieving platinum-status certification.

One of the main features you will see is the large labyrinth limestone cave with its unique rock formations, its stalactites, stalagmites and abundance of overhead ceiling pockets, including bats.

The Green Grotto Caves is approx. 1,525 metres long and 12 metres deep and includes many chambers, light holes and a subterranean lake named the ‘Grotto Lake’.

You will take a tour of the Caves, where you guide will explain the history and true culture of this well-preserved site.
